Must Look American

If one group of people can be violated - any group of people can be violated. It may not happen all at once but we’ll all eventually be there…minorities first as usual. If someone supports mean-spirited behaviors it won’t be long before it comes back to them - in some places of the world this is called Karma. Looking at our reality, we can already say that we’re closer than ever to that dark fascist place where folks - citizens or otherwise - will have NO rights unless they’re rich white politicians, military or corporate people. Let’s open our eyes! We tend to ignore the issues until it touches our personal life…but the injustice (working together w/our beloved LAWS) is not far from raping us all, including those citizens whose ignorance and racism can be heard louder than their “go back home!” screams.

Last year already several American citizens were deported - apparently Immigration authorities decided that based on their looks these men were most probably “illegal Mexicans”. Checking their documentation was apparently unnecessary and since undocumented folks don’t have rights, like the right to attorney, off they went to their (new) homeland. Maybe “assimilation” would not really be enough now-a-days. Perhaps all those who believe in the American freedoms and the so-called “American Dream” will need to do the “Michael Jackson” and try to look like someone they are not. Identity vs Survival? Being obedient servants who keep their masters happy vs being free, respected as a different race or culture and even equal competitors? Tough one…I’d chose - as would most - the self-love path: I’m always me - immigrant, brown, female and independent and I’m not uncomfortable with that self at all.
For some reason a large part of white America has a hard time understanding that white Europeans & descendants are not the only ones entitled to being “American.” Again and again we’re witnesses to the criminalization and disenfranchisement of people of color. To the minority it is not an anthropological study - it is just plain obvious every day reality. The modern world places a blond blue eyed image on America while the greatest of all memory loss is that America’s face was and never stopped being a brown face - that of a Native American.
The more the system goes out of its way to make minorities feel uncomfortable and oppress them the more value their identity gains…and that’s probably how movements and revolutions begin. We should expect people to love and respect themselves. It’s actually very healthy. ;)
