Big Media for Small Perspective
August 27th, 2007 by insighter
Big Media has been successful at numbing our brains and encouraging us to ignore the realities outside of the comfort of the living room…not to mention it has filled our brains with trash and its industry feeds on our ignorance and our weakness for cheap distasteful drama.
If there’s anything more harmful to a very young mind - children but also young adults - it is TV. For children because it does not allow for the brain to develop in the way that it could - I call it brain binding (like in foot binding). For young adults (and many adults), it is called perspective binding. TV presents a reality that in most cases does not exist - it allow us to live in our US bubble and comes from particular perspectives. For example, the image of Latinos, Black and Asian men in hip hop and rap seems to be feeding a system that already keeps minorities down, away from education, from respect to women, from a desire for growth, from opportunities, or the chance to succeed. It mostly provides images of drug-selling weapon-carrying aggressive pimping heroes. The hidden message repeats enough that it has been successful at selling this propaganda to millions of minority men and women who are looking for a role model they can relate to and then start to think a character like this is “cool”. When education and well-spoken English is believed to be a “white thing” and those who pursue it are ’sell-outs’ we’ve got bad news - we’ve got well brain-washed minds and a promise to a darker future for minority communities as they become symbols of only negative things…This is just one example of Big Media effect on the community.
I might be a little late for this one (considering April has come and gone 4 months ago!) but why don’t you add this dates to your next year’s calendar.
Otherwise, why not use Independent Media for news and entertainment?!!
